The pathways that regulate ocular movements start with supranuclear control pathways that originate from various cortical areas and are relayed through a number of brainstem nuclei before synapsing on the cranial nerve nuclei that innervate the extraocular muscles. This section demonstrates abnormal eye movements that are seen with both supranuclear (upper motor neuron) and nuclear or fascicular (lower motor neuron) oculomotor disorders.
